As Malaysia moves towards a cashless and digitally connected economy, the government continues to support micro-entrepreneurs through inclusive initiatives.
Geran Digital Penjaja Madani (GDPjM) is a targeted grant for hawkers and small traders. This initiative aims to help everyday traders adopt digital tools, starting with a Point-of-Sale (POS) system.
If you’re a small trader operating daily with minimal digital tools, this grant is made for you.
What is GDPjM?
The Geran Digital Penjaja Madani (GDPjM) is a one-off grant worth RM1,000, introduced under the PMKS MADANI 2025 digital initiative. It is designed specifically for hawkers and microbusinesses in Malaysia who want to adopt POS technology to improve business efficiency.
Unlike a loan, GDPjM is a fully subsidized grant, meaning no repayment is required. The RM1,000 subsidy goes directly toward covering the cost of an approved POS system.
The grant encourages small traders to move away from manual operations and begin embracing digital payment acceptance, automated reporting, and better inventory tracking.

Who’s This Grant For?
This grant is for Malaysian small and medium businesses that would like to use a POS system. It includes Malaysian-owned SMEs and micro-enterprises of any industry, not solely retail or food.
To be eligible for the application, the business should be 60% Malaysian-owned at a minimum. The owner and any partners have to be Malaysian citizens as well. The latter rule keeps the support centered on local, not foreign-owned, firms.
Another big detail: the business needs to be operational for a minimum of six months, and in some cases, one year. This is to ensure the business is stable prior to obtaining financing. It serves to weed out new ventures that haven’t demonstrated that they can sustain themselves. For instance, a little bakery that opened its doors eight months ago qualifies, but a new food truck that debuted last month does not. If you have already received assistance from Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) funds, you can still apply if you want to purchase new tools or equipment, such as upgrading your POS system.
The grant caps company size, too. It’s for SMEs with annual sales below RM300,000. In other words, it targets small shops, cafés, market stalls, online stores and small farms—businesses where every ringgit counts. Both food and non-food/ag companies can utilize this grant. So a fruit seller at a market and a small online gadget shop both fall within the rules, as long as they meet the sales cap.
What’s the Application Timeline?
The GDPjM grant is expected to open in July 2025. While the exact date is yet to be announced, interested business owners are strongly encouraged to prepare early.
To make the process smooth, you should:
- Choose a registered Digitalization Partner (DP) ahead of time
- Gather required documentation (SSM cert, business photos, etc.)
- Plan which POS system you want to use
By getting ready in advance, you’ll have a better chance of securing the grant before the funding quota runs out.
How to Apply for the RM1,000 POS Grant
Applying for government grants is simple, but you must meet the basic eligibility criteria.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Malaysian citizen
- Registered hawker or microbusiness (via SSM, PBT, or a recognized hawker association)
- Must not have received similar digital grants before (e.g. MSME Digital Grant)
- Must submit a quotation or invoice from an approved Digitalization Partner
Required Documents:
- Copy of NRIC
- SSM Certificate or hawker license
- Photos of business premises
- Completed application form (to be submitted online)
- Invoice from a registered DP (like Rockbell)
Why Does This Matter?
Many hawkers still manage their business manually, using notebooks, calculators, or basic cash-handling methods. These not only slow down the business process but also increase the risk of errors and limit income tracking.
With consumer behavior shifting toward digital payments and quicker service, a modern POS system helps hawkers:
- Speed up ordering and payment
- Accept eWallet and QR payments (like DuitNow, Touch ‘n Go, GrabPay)
- Generate end-of-day sales reports automatically
- Keep track of best-selling items and stock
- Minimize errors in transactions
